Cyclists put newspapers under their jerseys on mountain descents to create a temporary, rudimentary wind barrier, trapping a pocket of warm air to protect their chest and core from the bone-chilling winds and prevent a sudden drop in body temperature after the exertion of climbing. This effective, classic technique is still used today.
